History buffs and tourists have been following the signs to famous Civil War sites in the Carolinas for years, among them Fort Fisher in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Fort Sumter off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. However, many of the sites from the states’ rich Civil War heritage are off the beaten path.

Touring the Carolinas’ Civil War Sites helps travelers find the states’ battlefields, forts, and memorials, as well as the lesser skirmish sites, homes, and towns that also played significant roles in the war. The book’s 21 tours cover the entire Carolinas, combining riveting history with clear, concise directions and maps. As fascinating to read as it is fun to take on the road, this second edition includes additional historic houses in Charleston, a new battlefield in New Bern, updated driving directions, new photos for each site, and more.

In Charleston, South Carolina, the ring and broach that the captain of the world's first successful submarine, the H. L. Hunley, hoped would woo his teenaged sweetheart are displayed just yards away from the vessel in which he died.
Mr. and Mrs. Harper are still occasionally seen in their home at Bentonville, North Carolina, which was used as a Union hospital in 1865.
Fort Fisher, North Carolina, a simple dirt fort on the Atlantic coast east of Wilmington, made sure Robert E. Lee was supplied with food and ammunition, lengthening the war by nearly two years.

Once I discovered how much I like these Blair books (i.e. published by John F. Blair, Winston-Salem), and once I realized how consistent they are in quality and content, I bought all of them.

This one is exceptionally good. Here's a guide that takes you on 21 driving tours through the Carolina's that have particularly strong affiliation with the Civil War. Think the Civil War was all about Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania? I challenge you to read this book.

The tours are organized around themes. For example, there's a "Sherman's Exit" tour, and a "Surrender" tour. They are all chosen and written by one of the foremost experts in this field, Clint Johnson. This is really, really good stuff.

Each tour emphasizes place, and is organized around important physical and natural landmarks. Buildings, museums, graves and battlefields are the features most often mentioned.

The book includes simple maps, easy-to-follow directions, and a brief section of listings in the back. It is not a typical travel guide, and those looking for long listings of recommended hotels and restaurants should consider other sources. This book, as all the books published by Blair, is really a cultural guide.

There are quite a few black & white photographs throughout the book, but you should buy the book for the text. This is not a book for your coffee table, nor is it a glossy, colorful travel guide (such as DK's Eyewitness series).

Enjoyed THE Book VERY much.

Thanks,

I enjoy learning about the facts presented regarding the The Civil War Sites in the Carolina's expecially North Carolina. Well written and well presented.
Just moved to the Carolinas and my husband is a history buff, so I knew he'd enjoy this book. Look forward to visiting some of the sites listed.
This books is a great addition to any tour guide of he Carolina back country. Recently while visiting Charleston, I realized there was so much history tucked away in the countryside. This book opened doors and brought on new travel agendas.
You hear about the big battles, seiges and such of the Civil War, but this wonderful book gives more detail into just went on in the Carolinas during that War. It hits the little known sites as well as the more well known sites. I enjoyed it and used on a trip I took to the Carolinas. I would recommend it if you're looking for something a bit different.
I've been a student of the War Between the States for my lifetime, and I visit historic sites whenever I can. This guide is absolutely the best I've come across. It's broken into the various stages of the war in The Carolinas, and gives the reader specific directions on modern highways and byways in order to allow the reader not only to know the details and minutae of each batle, but how to navigate. The writer is clearly an expert in the field and anyone interested in expanding his understanding of the period couldn't find a better guide.
My used copy turned out to be a little beat up but it would probably look like that after I take it with me on my planned trip to the Carolinas anyway. It is a book designed to take with you as you get out and explore. The author clearly loves his subject and is a good storyteller as he weaves story and driving directions like he's in your car with you. He takes you on 19 tours in all between the two states. He doesn't seem to whitewash the history for either Southern or Northern benefit which is very much to his credit.
